Indian CGPA to German GPA Converter — The Exact Bavarian Formula Explained (2026)

Last Updated: July 2026 | Reading Time: 8 minutes

Every Indian student applying to a German university faces this question: "What does my 8.2 CGPA translate to in the German grading system?"

German universities don't use a 10-point scale. They use a 1–4 scale (where 1.0 is the best and 4.0 is the minimum passing grade). To convert your Indian CGPA or percentage, they use the Modified Bavarian Formula — and getting this calculation wrong can cost you your admission.

The Modified Bavarian Formula — Explained

The official formula used by German universities to evaluate Indian transcripts:

$$\text{German GPA} = 1 + 3 \times \frac{X_{max} - X}{X_{max} - X_{min}}$$

Where:

  • X = Your actual CGPA
  • X_max = Maximum possible CGPA at your university (usually 10.0)
  • X_min = Minimum passing CGPA at your university (usually 4.0, but check your transcript)

The result is your German grade, where 1.0 = Outstanding and 4.0 = Minimum Pass.

Quick Conversion Table (10-Point Scale, Xmin = 4.0)

Your CGPAGerman GPAGerman Grade Label
9.51.25Sehr Gut (Very Good)
9.01.50Sehr Gut (Very Good)
8.51.75Gut (Good)
8.02.00Gut (Good)
7.52.25Befriedigend (Satisfactory)
7.02.50Befriedigend (Satisfactory)
6.52.75Ausreichend (Sufficient)

Important: If your university's minimum passing grade is different from 4.0, the result changes. Use the calculator and enter your university's specific passing CGPA.

Step-by-Step Worked Example

Your CGPA: 8.2 on a 10-point scale. University minimum pass: 4.0.

  1. X = 8.2, X_max = 10.0, X_min = 4.0
  2. German GPA = 1 + 3 × (10.0 − 8.2) / (10.0 − 4.0)
  3. German GPA = 1 + 3 × (1.8 / 6.0)
  4. German GPA = 1 + 3 × 0.30
  5. German GPA = 1 + 0.90 = 1.90

A German GPA of 1.90 is considered "Good" (Gut) — competitive for most German universities. TUM prefers 1.75 or better; most other universities accept 2.5 or better.

Does Each German University Calculate It Differently?

Yes — while the Modified Bavarian Formula is the standard, some universities apply it with university-specific Xmin values. Always verify the specific formula on your target university's admission portal.

The ANABIN database (official German recognition database) provides university-specific conversion tables and is the final authority.
