The working-professional study system
1. Start with a target, not a coaching package
Make a short list of programmes, their current test requirements, score policies, work-experience expectations, and application rounds. GMAT scores are valid for five years according to the official registration page, but a school may impose its own date, delivery-mode, or verification rules. [4] Do not assume that a valid score is automatically accepted everywhere.
For example, ISB’s PGP page says the programme is designed for candidates with at least 24 months of full-time work experience before enrolment and requires a valid, verified test-centre-based GMAT or GRE score no older than five years from the application deadline. [5] IIM Bangalore’s EPGP 2027–28 admissions page specifies at least five years of post-bachelor’s work experience, a valid GMAT or GRE score, and states that an online-at-home GMAT/GRE score will not be accepted for that programme. [6]
2. Protect small weekday blocks
Weekend classes provide structure, but retention is built between classes. Put two short, non-negotiable practice blocks on your calendar. A 45-minute Quant set before the workday may be more realistic than a three-hour session after a late production incident. Use the other for error review or Data Insights practice.
Keep an error log with four fields: question type, reason for the miss, better decision rule, and a reattempt date. “Careless mistake” is not a diagnosis; record whether the problem was concept knowledge, interpretation, setup, calculation, pacing, or guessing under pressure.
3. Treat mocks as measurement, not entertainment
A full-length mock is useful only when followed by analysis. Record section order, time remaining, guessed questions, fatigue, and the questions you changed during review. GMAC says its official practice exams use the same format, scoring algorithm, and timing as the real experience. [3] Use those official tests for major readiness decisions, and do not compare scores from unrelated third-party platforms as if they were interchangeable.
One high score does not establish readiness. Look for repeatability, a manageable time pattern, and no serious section weakness. One bad mock during a product launch also does not define your ceiling; review the causes before changing your test date.
4. Build a plan for Bangalore realities
A commute from Whitefield, Electronic City, or North Bangalore can turn a short class into a half-day commitment. If you attend in person, test the route at the actual class time and account for peak traffic. If you study online, confirm that your home has a quiet workspace, stable connectivity, and a backup plan for power or network interruptions.
For the official online GMAT, GMAC requires candidates to confirm the appointment time zone, run the system check, prepare the testing area, use an eligible photo ID, and arrive 30 minutes early for check-in. [7] Coaching from home does not remove the need to practise the exam’s technical and environmental requirements.
