Indian CGPA to German GPA Converter: Official Modified Bavarian Formula

German universities don't understand a 7.8 CGPA or a 68% aggregate. They evaluate your application using the Modified Bavarian Formula, and most Indian students either don't know it exists or calculate it wrong.

This tool does it correctly. In seconds. For free.

Short answer

German universities convert an Indian CGPA with the Modified Bavarian Formula: German grade = 1 + 3 × (best possible grade - your grade) ÷ (best possible grade - lowest pass grade). On a 10-point scale with a pass mark of 4.0, a CGPA of 8.0 becomes 2.0 and 7.0 becomes 2.5. In Germany a lower number is better.

What is my German grade for a 10-point CGPA?

Worked with the Modified Bavarian Formula, best grade 10 and lowest pass grade 4.0. If your university's pass mark is different, enter it in the converter above, because it changes the result.

Indian CGPA (out of 10)German gradeWhat it means
9.51.25Very good (sehr gut)
9.01.50Very good (sehr gut)
8.51.75Good (gut)
8.02.00Good (gut)

7.02.50Satisfactory (befriedigend)
6.52.75Satisfactory (befriedigend)
6.03.00Satisfactory (befriedigend)

Which number do universities use?

Most universities and uni-assist apply the same formula but use the pass mark printed on your own transcript. If uni-assist gives you an official grade (VPD), use that number in your applications instead of an estimate.

Example: a CGPA of 7.8 with a pass mark of 4 gives 1 + 3 × (10 − 7.8) ÷ (10 − 4) = 2.10. With a pass mark of 5 it gives 2.32. The same CGPA lands on a different German grade depending on the pass mark, which is why the pass mark matters.

Rounding: universities round differently. For example, the University of Wuppertal's Computer Simulation in Science programme rounds down to the first decimal place, so 2.10 counts as 2.1. Check your programme's admission rules, or use the converter above, which shows one decimal.

Percentage instead of CGPA? Use 100 as the maximum and your pass percentage (for example 40 or 50) as the minimum in the converter above.

Why This Matters

Understanding Your German GPA Is Step One

Once you know your German GPA, the real strategy begins. A 2.3 GPA doesn't automatically mean rejection, and a 1.8 GPA doesn't automatically mean admission. German university applications involve your GPA, your SOP, your LORs, your research background, and your German language proficiency (for some programs).

Students who plan strategically, choosing the right program type, university tier, and application timing, consistently outperform students with better grades but no strategy.

How to convert Indian CGPA to German GPA

Short answer

To convert an Indian CGPA to a German GPA, most German universities and uni-assist use the Modified Bavarian Formula: German Grade = 1 + 3 × (Xmax − X) ÷ (Xmax − Xmin). Here, X is your CGPA, Xmax is the maximum possible grade (typically 10.0), and Xmin is the minimum passing grade (such as 4.0). On the German scale, 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 is the minimum pass.

The Modified Bavarian Formula

German Grade = 1 + 3 × (Xmax − X) ÷ (Xmax − Xmin)
VariableDefinitionTypical Indian Value
XYour cumulative CGPA or aggregate percentage8.0 CGPA (or 75%)
XmaxThe highest possible grade on your scale10.0 (for CGPA) or 100% (for percentage)
XminThe lowest passing grade at your institution4.0 (for CGPA) or 40% (sometimes 35%)

Worked Example: 8.0 CGPA

Input: 8.0 out of 10.0 scale, minimum passing mark 4.0.

  1. Difference from maximum: 10.0 − 8.0 = 2.0
  2. Passing score range: 10.0 − 4.0 = 6.0
  3. Divide the differences: 2.0 ÷ 6.0 = 0.333
  4. Multiply by 3: 3 × 0.333 = 1.0
  5. Add base mark 1: 1 + 1.0 = 2.0 (gut / good)

Worked Example: 75% Percentage

Input: 75% aggregate, minimum passing mark 40%.

  1. Difference from maximum: 100 − 75 = 25
  2. Passing score range: 100 − 40 = 60
  3. Divide the differences: 25 ÷ 60 = 0.417
  4. Multiply by 3: 3 × 0.417 = 1.25
  5. Add base mark 1: 1 + 1.25 = 2.25 (gut / good)

Each university states its own rounding rule; check its admission regulations.

Which Maximum and Minimum Passing Marks Should You Use?

Always consult your official grade transcript or your university academic regulations for your exact Xmax and Xmin.

Using the correct minimum pass mark is critical: if your university passing mark is 5.0 instead of 4.0, an 8.0 CGPA calculates as 1 + 3 × (10 − 8) ÷ (10 − 5) = 1 + 6 ÷ 5 = 2.2 instead of 2.0. (uni-assist grading system guide).

Step-by-Step Guide

How to Convert Your Indian CGPA to the German GPA Scale

Follow these simple steps to calculate your GPA using the Modified Bavarian Formula used by TU9 and other German public universities.

1

Find your university's grading scale

Before entering any numbers, identify three values from your university's grade card or official website: (1) Your cumulative CGPA or percentage, (2) The maximum possible grade (usually 10.0 or 100%), and (3) The minimum passing grade (varies, VTU uses 40/100, some use 4.0/10). These three numbers are the inputs for the Modified Bavarian Formula.

2

Input your current CGPA or percentage

Enter your cumulative CGPA or aggregate percentage in the first input field. This is the 'X' value in the Modified Bavarian Formula. Use your most recent official transcript value, not a self-calculated estimate.

3

Set the maximum grade for your institution

Enter the maximum achievable grade at your university, typically 10.0 (for CGPA-based systems like VTU, JNTU) or 100 (for percentage-based systems like Anna University, Mumbai University). This is the 'Xmax' in the formula.

4

Set the minimum passing grade

Enter the minimum passing grade at your university, typically 4.0/10 or 40/100 or 35/100 depending on your institution. This 'Xmin' value is critical, an incorrect value here will shift your entire conversion result.

5

Calculate and interpret your result

Click 'Calculate German GPA' to apply the Modified Bavarian Formula. Your result will be a number between 1.0 and 4.0. Remember: lower is better. A result of 1.5 to 2.0 is excellent; 2.0 to 2.5 is good; 2.5 to 3.0 is acceptable; above 3.0 may limit your options at TU9 universities but still qualifies for other programs.

FAQ Section

FAQs: indian cgpa to german gpa converter

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) measures your academic score for a single semester or term. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall average of grade points earned across all completed semesters of your degree programme. German university admissions usually look at your overall result (CGPA or final percentage), as stated in each programme's admission rules.

Is GPA and percentage the same?

No. A GPA is a scaled numerical score (such as out of 10.0 in India, 4.0 in the United States, or 1.0 to 4.0 in Germany), whereas percentage represents the proportion of marks scored out of 100. Because different universities follow different grade-point conversion curves, consult our CGPA to percentage conversion formula rather than converting linearly.

What is CGPA and how is it calculated?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is calculated by multiplying each course credit by the grade point earned, adding those products across all semesters, and dividing by the total credits registered. German universities and uni-assist convert this final cumulative score into a German grade using the Modified Bavarian Formula.

What is the Modified Bavarian Formula?

The Modified Bavarian Formula is the official mathematical standard used by German public universities and Uni-Assist to convert international grades onto the German 1.0 to 4.0 grading scale. The formula is: German GPA = 1 + 3 × (Xmax − X) ÷ (Xmax − Xmin), where X is your grade, Xmax is the maximum possible grade at your institution, and Xmin is the minimum passing grade. It was designed to account for differences in grading systems across countries, especially India, where a 7.5/10 CGPA is actually excellent, not average.

How is a German GPA grade interpreted?

On the German scale, 1.0 is the absolute best (Outstanding / Sehr Gut), 2.0 is Good (Gut), 3.0 is Satisfactory (Befriedigend), and 4.0 is the minimum passing score (Ausreichend). A score of 5.0 is a failure (Nicht Ausreichend). Unlike Indian systems, a lower number means a better grade. Most competitive TU9 programs expect a German GPA of 2.0 or better for serious consideration.

Does this tool support university-specific passing marks?

Yes. You can specify the exact maximum grade (e.g. 10.0 or 100%) and minimum passing grade (e.g. 4.0 or 40%) for your specific university. This is important because VTU, Anna University, and Mumbai University all have different grading scales. Using the correct Xmax and Xmin values from your institution produces the most accurate result, and will match what Uni-Assist calculates.

What German GPA is required for public universities?

For highly competitive programs (NC: Numerus Clausus) at TU9 universities like TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, and KIT, a German GPA of 2.0 or better is strongly recommended. For other public universities (non-TU9) such as TU Dortmund or Augsburg, a German GPA of up to 2.5 is commonly accepted. Keep in mind that GPA is only one component, your SOP, LORs, and work experience also influence admissions.

My CGPA is 7.2 on a 10-point scale. What is my German GPA?

Using standard VTU/Mumbai University grading (Xmax = 10, Xmin = 4.0): German GPA = 1 + 3 × (10 − 7.2) ÷ (10 − 4) = 1 + 3 × 0.467 = 1 + 1.4 = 2.4. This means you'd convert to approximately 2.4 on the German scale, which is within the acceptable range for most German public universities. Use this tool to verify with your institution's exact Xmin value.

Does the APS require a minimum German GPA?

The APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) for India does not apply the Modified Bavarian Formula themselves, they simply verify your academic credentials. However, German universities and Uni-Assist use the Bavarian Formula when assessing your GPA for admission. A strong German GPA (2.0 or better) significantly improves your chances at TU9 programs. Students with lower GPAs often compensate with strong research experience, GRE scores, or an excellent SOP.

Does my percentage convert differently than CGPA?

Yes, if your transcript uses percentage (e.g. 72%), you treat it as the percentage directly. Set Xmax = 100 and Xmin = 40 (or whatever your institution's pass mark is). The formula then calculates: German GPA = 1 + 3 × (100 − 72) ÷ (100 − 40) = 1 + 3 × 0.467 = 2.4. This tool supports both percentage and CGPA formats.

Why does Uni-Assist show a slightly different result?

Uni-Assist uses the same Modified Bavarian Formula, but may apply institution-specific grading tables from a master database they maintain for Indian universities. Minor discrepancies (±0.1 to 0.2) can occur if your university is listed with specific Xmax/Xmin defaults in their system. If you have received an official Uni-Assist GPA assessment, use that number for your applications. This tool is a reliable estimate for planning purposes.

Can I apply to German universities with a German GPA above 2.5?

Yes, many German universities accept students with a German GPA between 2.5 and 3.0, particularly for non-NC programs. Some universities also offer Conditional Admission (Bedingte Zulassung) where you begin with a Foundation Program. Additionally, your GRE Quant score can partially compensate for a lower GPA in engineering and science programs. Book a free profile evaluation with our team to understand your realistic options.

Should I use my final semester CGPA or my overall CGPA?

For most German university applications, you submit your latest available transcript, typically your 6th or 7th semester CGPA if you are applying before graduation. If you've graduated, use your final degree CGPA. Some universities consider your last 2 years of grades separately. If your grades improved significantly in recent years, highlight this progression in your SOP, it can work in your favor.
