How much is rent in each city?

Is €1,300 a month enough to live in Germany?

Yes, in every city in our table. Using median WG room rents for Winter Semester 2026/27 plus about €400 for other costs, a month costs about €1,250 in Munich, €1,050 in Berlin or Hamburg and €910 in an average university city. €1,300 leaves little spare in Munich and a cushion almost everywhere else.

These monthly totals do not include one-time costs such as the rent deposit, the semester contribution or flights. Plan for those separately (see the one-time costs table below).

How much does it cost to live in Germany in Indian rupees?

At the European Central Bank reference rate of ₹106.06 per euro on 27 October 2026, living costs come to about ₹96,500 a month in an average German university city, about ₹1,11,400 in Berlin or Hamburg and about ₹1,32,600 in Munich. The €11,904 blocked account is about ₹12,62,600 a year.

Rupee figures are rounded to the nearest ₹100. The exchange rate changes every day, so re-check it before you transfer money. Your bank's rate will also be a little worse than the reference rate.

Can part-time work cover the gap?

Often, yes. Non-EU students can work 140 full days or 280 half days a year. The minimum wage is €13.90 an hour in 2026 (€14.60 from 2027). A mini-job can pay up to €603 a month in 2026 without tax or most social contributions, about 10 hours a week at minimum wage.

But do not plan your first months around a job. It takes time to find one, especially without German. Arrive with enough money for at least 2 to 3 months on top of the blocked account release. Read our part-time jobs guide.

How do I choose a city?

What budgeting mistakes do students make?

• Assuming €992 is enough everywhere. In Munich it is not.
• Forgetting the deposit. Up to 3 months' cold rent, paid before you move in.
• Counting on a job from month one. Bring a cash buffer.
• Forgetting insurance. About €146 a month comes on top of rent.
• Choosing by ranking alone. Check the city's rent before you accept an offer.
