QUICK ANSWER: What German level do Indian students need? It depends on your route. An English-taught Master's needs no German for admission, but B1 to B2 makes a big difference for part-time work and jobs. A Studienkolleg usually needs B1 for the entrance test. A German-taught Bachelor's or Master's needs about C1 (TestDaF or DSH). For a Blue Card settlement permit after 21 months instead of 27, you need B1.

German is the biggest non-money barrier for students heading to Germany. Your Master's may be in English, but the city you live in, most part-time jobs and many employers work in German. This guide shows what each level lets you do, which exams count, a realistic roadmap from A1 to B2, and where to learn in India.

What can I do at each level?

The levels follow the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):

A1	Introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions, read signs and menus
A2	Handle routine tasks: shopping, the bank, the doctor, describing your day
B1	Follow the main points of clear speech, give opinions, write simple connected text
B2	Discuss complex topics, follow technical texts, hold a job interview
C1	Follow lectures and academic texts, write and speak fluently on complex subjects

What is the difference between B1 and B2 language level?

B1 means you can handle familiar, everyday topics: the Council of Europe's scale says a B1 user understands the main points of clear standard language on familiar matters. B2 goes further: you understand the main ideas of complex text, including technical discussion in your own field, and can talk with native speakers without strain for either side.

Both are "independent user" levels. A German-taught degree usually needs more than B2 (about C1).

What does a roadmap from A1 to B2 look like?

A typical pace for a student studying intensively, 5 to 6 days a week:

A1: the foundation

Grammar: present tense, articles (der, die, das), basic sentence order
Vocabulary: family, numbers, food, directions, daily routine
Free resource: Deutsche Welle's "Nicos Weg" course
Exam: Goethe-Zertifikat A1 or telc A1

A2: everyday life

Grammar: past tense (Perfekt), accusative and dative, modal verbs, separable verbs
Vocabulary: travel, health, work, hobbies
Exam: Goethe-Zertifikat A2

At A2 you can manage simple everyday situations in Germany without English.

B1: independence

Grammar: relative clauses, simple passive, Konjunktiv II, connectors
Vocabulary: education, technology, environment, work
Add: 2 to 3 hours a week of German media, such as Tagesschau or podcasts
Exam: Goethe-Zertifikat B1, the usual level for Studienkolleg entrance tests

B1 is the turning point: part-time jobs and real conversations open up.

B2: professional German

Grammar: advanced passive, Konjunktiv I, noun-verb combinations
Vocabulary: your field's technical terms, job postings, emails
Add: German news, podcasts and technical articles every week
Exam: Goethe-Zertifikat B2, or TestDaF if you need university admission

At B2 you can do a job interview, write professional emails and handle offices without a translator.

Book your exam early. Exam dates in India fill up weeks or months ahead, and missing one can push your application back by a whole intake.

How do I keep improving after I arrive?

Switch your phone and laptop to German. Annoying for two weeks, then normal.
Find a tandem partner. Your university likely runs a language exchange.
Take the university's German courses. Many are free or cheap for enrolled students.
Speak from day one. People appreciate the effort.
Join a club (Verein). Sports, music or hobby clubs are where you practise real German.

What mistakes should I avoid?

Starting too late. Beginning after your admission letter leaves too little time.
Relying only on apps. Apps do not prepare you for writing and speaking exams.
Skipping speaking practice. Many Indian students are strong at reading and writing but freeze in the oral exam.
Not matching exam dates to deadlines. Plan backwards from your application deadline.
Stopping at A2. B1 is where German starts to pay off.

What level is needed for a German-taught degree?
