But the route is longer than most families expect: German language, APS, often a year of Studienkolleg, then the degree. This guide shows each route, the timeline and the real costs.

Which routes exist after Class 12?

German universities use the anabin database to decide what an Indian school certificate allows. A Class 12 certificate alone is usually not treated as equal to the German Abitur.

What is a Studienkolleg?

A Studienkolleg is a one-year preparatory course that brings your school education up to the German entrance level. It ends with the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP), and the result is what you use to apply for a Bachelor's. Public Studienkollegs charge no tuition, though you pay a semester contribution.

Studienkollegs at universities prepare you for university Bachelor's degrees. Those at universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) usually lead only to applied-science degrees. You usually need an admission letter from a university to take the Studienkolleg entrance test (Aufnahmeprüfung), so apply to several.

Tip

Places at public Studienkollegs are limited. Apply to at least three or four, and start German early so you reach B1 in time for the entrance test.

What mistakes should I avoid?

  • Starting German too late. Beginning A1 after Class 12 adds a year. Start in Class 11.
  • Ignoring the 70% rule. Below 70%, the main routes are closed from Winter 2026/27. Plan an alternative, such as a Bachelor's in India first and a Master's in Germany later.
  • Applying to one Studienkolleg. Places are limited. Apply to several.
  • Relying on travel insurance. Travel insurance covers the visa period only. For enrolment you need German student health insurance.
  • Leaving the blocked account too late. Opening and funding it takes time, and visa slots fill up in summer.

Is a Bachelor's in Germany worth it?

It is worth it if you are ready for the commitment: German to a high level, a demanding academic system, and 2 to 3 years before the Bachelor's even starts. The reward is a low-cost degree from a public university and a path to work in Germany. If that timeline does not suit you, a Bachelor's in India followed by a Master's in Germany, where many programmes are taught in English, is often the better plan.
