How competitive are the top universities?

Your German grade matters. Convert your CGPA with the CGPA to German GPA Converter. A grade around 2.5 or better meets many published minimums, but selective programmes often expect much better.

How should Indian students choose?

1. Start from your Bachelor's subjects, not the ranking. Programmes check subject match and credits. See our credit table check.
2. Check your degree on anabin. Your university needs H+ and your degree "entspricht" or "gleichwertig". Read our anabin guide.
3. Mix your list: a few ambitious selection programmes, several target programmes, and some open admission programmes.
4. Count the full cost: tuition (if any), the €11,904 blocked account, and rent. Munich is the most expensive city for students.
5. Plan for German. Even with an English-taught degree, most jobs need German at B1 to B2.

Is TUM a public university, and does it charge tuition?

Yes, TUM is a public university. Its legal notice describes it as a corporation under public law and a state institution, supervised by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts. But it does charge tuition to students from outside the EU: most Master's programmes cost €4,000 or €6,000 a semester.

• From Winter Semester 2027/28 TUM's Master's tuition for non-EU students rises to €4,600 or €6,800 a semester. Students who enrolled before the increase keep the rate that applied when they started.
• The exact fee is on each programme's page. Check it there before you apply.
• You also pay the semester fee, which every TUM student pays and which varies by campus.
• Waivers exist but are limited. TUM offers some scholarships and fee waivers for international students; they are competitive.
• TUM Bachelor's graduates generally do not pay tuition for a following TUM Master's, if they meet TUM's conditions.

Is TUM better than IIT?

On world rankings, TUM is higher: the QS World University Rankings 2027 place TUM 25th and IIT Delhi, the top-ranked Indian institute, 118th. But a ranking measures the whole university, not your programme. For a Master's, compare the programme content, fees, language, job market and where you want to work afterwards.

There is no single answer for every student. If you want to build a career in Germany, a German Master's makes more sense. If you plan to work in India, compare carefully.

Are private universities in Germany worth it?

Sometimes, but compare carefully. Most public universities charge little or no tuition, while private universities charge fees for the whole programme. A private university can make sense if it offers a programme, intake or practical focus that public options don't. Before you pay, check that it is state-recognised (staatlich anerkannt).

How to check a private university:

1. State recognition. The Hochschulkompass of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) lists only state and state-recognised universities. If a university is not there, ask why.
2. Programme accreditation. Check the programme in the Akkreditierungsrat database of accredited study programmes.
3. Degree recognition for your plans. If you may return to India or move on to a PhD, check how the degree will be treated there.
4. Total cost. Add tuition for every semester to living costs, and compare it with public programmes that fit your profile.
